Liberty's top seven women's runners crossed the finish line together at the season-opening Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational on Aug. 31.

After its first meet of the 2012 season, the Liberty women's cross country team has climbed three spots in the Southeast Region. Previously ranked No. 15, the Lady Flames now reside at No. 12, as announced today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Liberty is one of two Big South squads to appear in this week's regional rankings, as defending conference champion High Point checks in at No. 15. ACC squads own the top six spots in the Southeast Region for the second consecutive poll, led by two-time defending regional champion Virginia.

The Lady Flames opened the 2012 campaign on Aug. 31 at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. Although the meet was not team scored, Liberty displayed its depth. Jessica Gass, Khristina Kanagy, Stephanie Buda, Meredith Mistretta, Jacy Christiansen, Katie Russo and Courtney Russo all crossed the finish line in a pack at the conclusion of the 4K race.

This Saturday, Liberty will be in action at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The meet, which will enable the Flames and Lady Flames to preview the course for the 2012 Big South Cross Country Championships, will begin with the men's 8K race at 9 a.m. The women's 5K will follow at 9:45.
