Flames Hoops Announces 2012-13 Schedule
2012-13 Men's Basketball Schedule
Non-conference matchups with the likes of Georgetown and Richmond along with the Legends Classic highlight the Liberty men's basketball 2012-13 season schedule, as announced by head coach Dale Layer.
Layer enters his fourth season at the helm of the Flames program. Last year, Liberty bounced back from tough a 0-6 start in Big South play to finish 14-18 overall and 9-9 in conference action.
"I like this schedule," Layer stated. "It contains both regional and national flavor. To start things off right out of the gate with Richmond, William & Mary and Georgetown over the first six days will test us early. Plus, we will play games near families of some of our players in the states of Texas and New York."
Layer added, "Our non-conference slate will be quite a challenge. It will prepare us very well for Big South play beginning in early January with the defending champions, UNC Asheville. It should be fun!"
The Flames kick off their 41st season on the road against Atlantic 10 member Richmond (Nov. 9). The contest marks the second of a two-game contract with the Spiders inside the Robins Center.
Liberty returns to Lynchburg for its home opener with William & Mary (Nov. 12). The Flames split with The Tribe last season, taking the first contest at Kaplan Arena, 75-72, before dropping a narrow 65-64 decision in the Vines Center.
On Nov. 14, Layer's squad squares off with national power Georgetown inside the Verizon Center, beginning the Flames' stint in the Legends Classic.
From the nation's capital, the Flames will head to Huntsville, Texas to compete in the Huntsville Subregional, hosted by Sam Houston State inside Johnson Coliseum. Liberty will open subregional play versus UC Irvine (Nov. 19), before facing the hosting Bearkats the following day. Liberty concludes its participation in the tournament against Southern Miss on Nov. 21.
Layer's squad steps back into the Vines Center on Nov. 29 to host Morgan State in a rematch of last year's Sears BracketBusters contest. The matchup begins a three-game homestand, which also includes matchups with CAA members Georgia State (Dec. 2) and Southern Virginia (Dec. 4).
The Flames return to Washington, D.C., on Dec. 15 to take on Howard. Liberty then heads further north to the Big Apple for a meeting against Iona. The contest is a long-awaited return game for the Flames, after hosting the Gaels during the 2011 Sears BracketBusters.
Liberty plays host to Milligan (Dec. 21) and Union College (Dec. 28) before ending its non-conference slate with a New Year's Eve bash on the road against Western Carolina (Dec. 31).
Beginning this season, Big South play will consist of a 16-game conference schedule which will include two games against divisional opponents (10 total games), and one crossover game against the opposing division (6 total). Division champions will be recognized, and all 12 teams will participate in the VisitMyrtleBeach.Com Big South Men's Basketball Championship.
Layer and the Flames receive a stiff test to begin the conference season, as they host two-time defending Big South Champion UNC Asheville (Jan. 5). Liberty then heads to nearby Lexington, Va., to take on VMI (Jan. 9), before returning home to face Coastal Carolina (Jan. 12).
Road games against High Point (Jan. 16) and Presbyterian College (Jan. 19) precede a three-game homestand versus first-year Big South member Longwood (Jan. 22), Charleston Southern (Jan. 26) and Campbell (Jan. 29).
Liberty makes a stop in Rock Hill, S.C., for a matchup against Winthrop (Feb. 2). Following a home contest versus Radford (Feb. 5), the Flames hit the road for contests against Gardner-Webb (Feb. 9) and Campbell (Feb. 13).
Three of Liberty's last five games will take place in the Vines Center. The Flames host High Point on Feb. 16, followed by a road matchup with Longwood (Feb. 19). Liberty is slated for a Sears BracketBusters contest at home on Feb. 23 before hosting VMI (Feb. 26). The Flames conclude the regular season with a road contest versus Radford (March 2).
The 2013 VisitMyrtleBeach.Com Big South Men's Basketball Championship takes place March 5-10 inside the HTC Center. The top two seeds in each division receive a bye, giving way to first-round matchups among the remaining seeds on March 5, followed by quarterfinals (March 7), semifinals (March 9) and finals (March 10). The winner earns an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament, with the opening round beginning March 19.
All television assignments and game times will be announced at a later date.
