BSC Opponent 2012 Preview: VMI
As the football team continues its August training camp, LibertyFlames.com will be taking a look at each of the Flames' Big South opponents, continuing today with VMI.
Along with today's brief preview of the Keydets, LibertyFlames.com has provided an audio interview with VMI Head Coach Sparky Woods and FSN reporter Nick Pierce (click audio player link above to listen to the interview).
The Keydets are coming off a 2-9 season, with both of their victories in 2011 coming at home against Big South foes (21-17 victory over Charleston Southern and a 31-24 victory over Gardner-Webb).
VMI returns a total of 35 letterwinners from last year, but Woods will only have 12 returning starters for his fifth season at the helm of the Keydets' program.
One of those returning starters on offense will be quarterback Eric Kordenbrock. The junior finished 2011 with 1,792 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, ranking as the No. 2 passing quarterback in the Big South Conference in the program's second year under a pro-set format.
On the defensive side of the field, the Keydets will be under the direction of first-year coordinator Jeff Farrington, who will have to replace five starters from last year's unit.
The top returning stopper for VMI will be inside linebacker A.J. Gross. He earned All-Big South second-team honors in 2011 after ranking No. 2 in the Big South with 90 tackles (8.2 tackles per game).
Liberty will close out its regular season schedule in Lexington, Va., this year, making the trek over the Blue Ridge Mountains to face VMI on Nov. 17.
The Flames have defeated the Keydets the last six times the two teams have met on the gridiron, including last year's 37-31 victory at home where VMI pushed the Flames for 60 minutes inside of Williams Stadium.
The last time the Flames visited Foster Stadium the outcome was much different than the 2011 match-up. Liberty controlled the pace of play from the onset, scoring the first 41 points before the Keydets tacked on a fourth quarter touchdown to avoid a shutout in a 41-7 Liberty victory on Oct. 16, 2010.
