Johnson Announces Flames' Fall Tournament Slate
Entering his first year concentrating solely on the men's tennis team and his seventh year at Liberty, head coach Chris Johnson has announced the squad's fall tournament slate for 2012.
"We are very excited about our fall tournament schedule," remarked Johnson. "We will be playing against the best players in the nation and expect to be tested."
Liberty's fall season will kick off with the 45th edition of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships (SIC), Sept. 7-10 in Athens, Ga. Hosted by the University of Georgia, the oldest fall collegiate tennis tournament in America features some of the top-ranked players in the country.
The Flames then travel to Tulsa, Okla., to take part in the ITA All-American Championships for the second straight season, Sept. 29-Oct. 7.
Members of the squad are also slated to compete in the UVa Fall Invite in Charlottesville, Va., Oct. 5-7.
The team's next test will come at the Wake Forest Invite, a new event for the program. This tournament hosted by the Demon Deacons runs from Oct. 12-14 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Flames return to Charlottesville once again, Oct. 18-22, to close out the fall season with the ITA Atlantic Regional.
"This fall schedule is the toughest our guys have ever played. We have some really strong players and I know they are excited to have these opportunities."
Top returners for the Flames include senior Siim Tuus and junior Shea Thomas, who anchored the top of Johnson's singles lineup last spring. Both are accustomed to tough fall schedules, having experienced success during 2011. Last fall, Tuus advanced to the Round of 32 at the ITA Atlantic Regional, while Thomas knocked off a seeded opponent in Georgia Tech's Vikram Hundal at the SIC.
