With the 2012-13 Liberty men's basketball season less than four months away, one of the Flames' returning starters is making international headlines. Competing in the FIBA U20 European Championships in Sofia Bulgaria (July 12-22) as a member the Polish national team, Liberty sophomore forward Tomasz Gielo is averaging 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in the team's first four games.
Gielo helped Poland improve its record to 3-0 in pool play on Saturday, leading the team with 13 points and 10 rebounds in an 83-49 victory over F.Y.R. of Macedonia. Poland continued its winning ways today against Luxembourg, winning its fourth-straight contest, 119-64. Gielo chipped in 11 points and five rebounds in the victory.
Recently, Gielo was interviewed by Eurohopes.com about Poland's current success in the European championships, as well as his thoughts on European players taking their talents to American college basketball courts. To check out the entire interview, visit the link here.
After missing the first four weeks of the 2011-12 campaign due to injury, Gielo gave the Flames a much needed energy boost in his Liberty debut on Dec. 17 against Hampton, finishing with nine points in a 74-65 victory over the Pirates. The Szczecin Poland native eventually assumed the starter's role in the No. 4 spot, starting 15 games in 21 appearances. Gielo concluded the year averaging 3.4 ppg on 30-for-58 shooting (51.7 percent).
