The Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex is undergoing a complete overhaul this summer, in preparation for the 2012-13 academic year. The new-look facility will be on full display when Liberty hosts the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships on April 18-20, 2013.

The track & field renovations, which are scheduled to be completed in August, are being conducted by Beynon Sports Surfaces. The company renovated Oregon's Hayward Field for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and recently completed renovations at Virginia's Lannigan Field.

As part of the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex renovations, the javelin runway and steeplechase pit are both being moved from the north end of the facility to the south end. Additionally, the steeplechase pit will now be located outside the track.

The facility will now include two shot put sectors, two discus rings, two pole vault runways and two long jump/triple jump runways. The track oval is being completely rebuilt and will feature eight 48-inch lanes.
