Melinda Bendik and Kolby Shepherd will both compete at the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Before they depart for the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, Melinda Bendik, Kolby Shepherd and head coach Brant Tolsma took the time to chat with Nick Pierce.

Bendik will compete in the women's hammer at Drake Stadium next Thursday at 4 p.m. Eastern, while Shepherd will participate in the men's pole vault next Friday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern.

Bendik became the first Liberty women's thrower ever to qualify for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, thanks to her performance at last weekend's NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet in Jacksonville, Fla. She threw the hammer a school-record 202-7, placing fourth at the meet and punching her ticket to Des Moines.

Shepherd will make his second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He pole vaulted a season-high 17-3.5 at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet to earn a return trip to Des Moines. A year ago, Shepherd tied for 20th place in the men's pole vault at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
