Lady Flames Earn 14-6 Win During Regular-Season Finale
Liberty's offense erupted for seven runs during the first inning, and kept going on the way to a 14-6, five inning victory over visiting Longwood during the regular-season finale, Saturday.
The Lady Flames wrap up the regular season at 19-34, and sent their five seniors out with a win in their final home game. The Lancers have concluded their season with a 29-26 record.
Liberty tied its season high with 14 runs scored, and got four RBIs each from Bridgett Woods and Kelby Allen.
Allen went 3-for-3 with two home runs and two runs scored, while Woods hit 1-for-2, and slugged a grand slam, her seventh homer of the season, during the first inning. Kelly Strickland added two hits, and Hanna Nichols went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Kaylee West's double, the 37th of her career, tied her for sixth all-time at Liberty.
Grace Nordan picked up her first career victory, leaving the game with a 7-6 lead after allowing three earned runs on six hits in three innings pitched. Alyssa DiMartino threw two hitless innings in relief.
The Lancers totaled just six hits, with six different players registering one hit apiece. Casey Lifsey led the team with two RBIs.
Libby Morris (13-14) drew the loss by allowing eight runs, two earned, in 1 1/3 innings pitched. Ashley Cornell allowed six runs in relief.
The Lady Flames broke the game open with seven runs after two outs in the first inning. Allen crossed the plate with Liberty's first run when Law reached on an error with two outs. Nichols then singled in two more runs for a 3-0 lead. With the bases still loaded, Woods crushed a grand slam to center.
Nordan held the Lancers off the scoreboard during the top of the second frame, and Cornell pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning for Longwood.
Longwood sliced the margin to one with a six-run third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Ashley Kramer drove in the first run. Jordan Cox, Courtney Long and Lifsey all followed with RBI base hits to make the score 7-6. The Lancers' third at bat ended with a groundout to short.
The Lady Flames tacked on two runs on a two-out homer by Allen in the bottom of the third. Kaylee West hit a double before Allen pushed the lead to 9-6 with her third homer of the season.
DiMartino then came on in relief of Nordan and pitched a 1-2-3 top of the fourth.
Sammi Shivock led off the bottom of the inning with a double. Jill Stephens walked, and Jenny Law reached on a bunt single, with Shivock scoring from second. Morris then re-entered the circle for Cornell, and a pair of wild pitches sent two additional runs home for the Lady Flames.
The Lancers went in order during the bottom of the fifth. Woods led off Liberty's at bat with a walk, and Allen ended the game at 14-6 with a two-run homer to right center.
Liberty has concluded its regular-season softball schedule. The Lady Flames will await seeding for the 2012 Big South Softball Championship, which takes place May 10-13 in Radford, Va. Seeding and first round matchups will be announced on Sunday.
