Liberty 4 x 200 Relay Takes 3rd in IC4A Final
The Liberty quartet of Leonard Robbins, Maxwell Asante, Roderick Spruel and ConRoy Smith notched an impressive third-place finish in the men's 4 x 200 relay IC4A final, Saturday afternoon at the 118th Penn Relays. Their performance was the Flames' most notable accomplishment on a cloudy, cool day at Franklin Field.
The Flames' 4 x 200 relay team posted a time of 1:25.82, which enabled them to edge out Maryland for third place in the race and also claim the No. 6 spot on Liberty's all-time performance list for the event.
About an hour earlier, Spruel, Robbins, Smith and Tarell Williams had recorded a time of 41.51 seconds in the IC4A final of the men's 4 x 100 relay. That effort placed the Flames fifth, which was an improvement over Liberty's seventh-place effort in its most recent visit to the 4 x 100 relay IC4A final, at the 2010 Penn Relays.
Liberty closed out its appearance at the Penn Relays by taking 12th place in the college section of the women's 4 x 800 relay. Jennifer Klugh, Amanda Wimbush, Meghan Burggraf and Jacy Christiansen posted a time of 9:11.33, which meets the ECAC qualifying standard and ranks them as the sixth-fastest outdoor 4 x 800 relay grouping in program history.
For the second straight week, Liberty's team will be divided between two different meets next weekend. Some Flames and Lady Flames will compete at the Duke Twilight in Durham, N.C., while others will head to Rock Hill, S.C., for the Winthrop Twilight. The meets, which will serve as Liberty's last-chance qualifiers for the IC4A and ECAC competitions, are both slated for Sunday, May 6.
