Homers Key 7-6 Liberty Victory Over Campbell
The Liberty Lady Flames built a 7-0 lead after four innings and held off a late rally from the visiting Campbell Camels for a 7-6 victory in game one, Friday at Liberty Softball Field.
Liberty (18-29, 9-10 Big South) collected five runs by way of the long ball. Campbell is now 25-26, 8-8 in Big South play.
The Lady Flames had eight hits in game one. Kelly Strickland went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Strickland is now in sole possession of second place all-time at Liberty with 45 career homers. Jenny Law hit 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs, while Kelby Allen also had two hits.
Chandler Ball (10-10) allowed four earned runs over four innings pitched before Alyssa DiMartino pitched the final three innings to earn her second save of the year.
Campbell registered with five batters collecting two hits apiece. Raven Lee hit a three-run homer, her ninth home run of the season.
Olivia Scarborough (8-4) sustained the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings.
The Camels threatened during the top of the second inning, getting back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third. The inning ended when Taylor McGee's line drive hit baserunner Raven Lee.
Liberty jumped ahead with a two-run first inning rally. Allen and Strickland hit consecutive singles to lead off. Sammi Shivock then walked to load the bases with nobody out. Scarborough hit Jill Stephens with a pitch, plating Allen. Law followed with an RBI single, good for a 2-0 lead.
Campbell received a pair of baserunners with two outs in the second inning. Meredith Crisante caught a sinking liner in center field to end the Camels' second time at bat.
The Lady Flames extended their lead to five on a three-run homer by Jenny Law in the bottom of the third. Shivock led off the inning with a single, and Stephens walked before Law's homer gave Liberty a 5-0 edge. Brittany Arnn then entered the circle in relief of Scarborough to get the final two outs.
Following a 1-2-3 Campbell fourth, the Lady Flames tacked on two more runs when Strickland launched a two-run home run to center. Allen singled with one out before Strickland's blast boosted Liberty's lead to seven.
The Camels mounted a five-run rally during the top of the fifth inning. After a pair of RBI singles, Lee went deep with a three-run homer to slice the deficit to two, 7-5. DiMartino then entered the circle for the Lady Flames and recorded three outs in a row.
Stephens recorded a bunt single to lead off the fifth for Liberty, and stole second. Arnn worked through trouble, keeping the score 7-5.
Campbell recorded three straight hits with one out in the sixth inning, and drew to within one run on a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Jones. DiMartino got Lee to ground out to short, leaving Liberty with a 7-6 lead through five and a half frames.
Liberty put runners on the corners with two outs during the sixth, before a groundout sent the game to the seventh inning.
McGee led off the seventh with a single to the wall, but was thrown out by Crisante trying to stretch it to a double. Melton then drew a walk, before DiMartino struck out Katie Andrews. Kailey Farmer lined out to third base, and DiMartino earned the save in a 7-6 Liberty win.
