Men's Basketball Earns BSC Sportsmanship Award
The Liberty men's basketball team earned the Big South Conference Team Sportsmanship Award for the 2011-12 winter season, as announced by the conference office, this afternoon. The honor was voted upon by the conference's student-athletes.
Head coach Dale Layer's squad shared this year's sportsmanship award with Presbyterian College, marking the second consecutive season the Flames have received the honor. Liberty now has four Big South Team Sportsmanship Awards on the year and a conference-high 36 since the program started in 2005.
On the court, the Flames closed out the year with a 14-18 record overall. After starting the conference slate with an 0-6 record, the Flames overcame the odds to win nine of their last 12 Big South contests. Liberty concluded conference play with a 9-9 ledger, finishing fifth in the standings.
At the conclusion of the 2011-12 athletic season, the Big South Conference's Institutional Sportsmanship Award will be announced. An institution's sport winners count towards the Institution Sportsmanship Award and the winner is determined on a system recognizing the highest percentage of the maximum possible points each institution is capable of achieving in that year. The institution with the highest percentage will win the award. VMI has won the Big South's Institutional Sportsmanship Award all six years of the award's history.
