The Big South runner-up Liberty women's outdoor track & field team moved up to No. 11 in the Southeast Region this week.

After an impressive showing at the 2012 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Liberty men's and women's outdoor track & field teams both moved up in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Regional Index. The Liberty men's squad jumped up four places to No. 10 in the Southeast Region, while the Lady Flames climbed one spot to No. 11.

Despite Coastal Carolina capturing the Big South women's team title, the Lady Flames remain ahead of the Chanticleers in the Southeast Region. Coastal Carolina checks in at No. 14 this week. Meanwhile, the Flames are again the only Big South men's team which appears in this week's Southeast Regional rankings.

The Liberty men's team won the Big South outdoor team title for the sixth consecutive season and the 17th time in the 19-year history of the meet. Redshirt junior Ryan Smith won both the Big South men's shot put and discus titles, earning Men's Most Outstanding Field Performer recognition. Kyle Wheeler won the men's high jump with a meet-record 7-1 clearance, garnering Men's Freshman of the Year honors. Meanwhile, Brant Tolsma was voted Men's Coach of the Year, making him a 50-time Big South Coach of the Year for his 26-year career at Liberty.

The Lady Flames took home the Big South runner-up trophy, marking the team's fourth straight top-two finish at this meet. Mychelle Cumings shared the Big South Women's Freshman of the Year award, after winning both the women's shot put and discus crowns.

Liberty athletes will compete in a pair of meets this week. Some Flames and Lady Flames are set to compete in the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa., Thursday through Saturday. Other Liberty competitors will take part in the Highlander Invitational, slated for Friday and Saturday in Radford, Va.
