Liberty Earns Twin Bill Sweep of PC
The Liberty softball team earned a doubleheader sweep with a 4-1 win over Presbyterian College, Friday at PC Softball Complex.
The Lady Flames advance to 17-26, with an 8-9 record in conference play after winning three games in a row. The Blue Hose are now 14-26, including a 6-9 Big South record
Liberty scored a pair of runs during the first inning, and added two more in the fifth, tallying all of its runs via homers.
Kelly Strickland went 2-for-2 and Sammi Shivock hit 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Shivock has now reached base safely in 15 straight contests. Crisante hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season, and 22nd of her career.
Alyssa DiMartino (8-16) allowed one run on seven hits, striking out four batters during the complete game.
Shelby Petik and Lyndsey York both went 2-for-3 for the Blue Hose. York doubled and scored PC's lone run in the game. Kensley Loudermelk (7-8) yielded four runs on eight hits in drawing the loss.
The Lady Flames took a quick 2-0 lead during the top of the first inning. Shivock hit a two-out double, and Crisante followed with a home run to give Liberty a 2-0 edge. A groundout ended Liberty's first time at bat.
Cat Tarvin hit a double with one out in the bottom half of the frame, but DiMartino held the Blue Hose scoreless with two groundouts.
Donovan opened the second inning by singling to right. Strickland and Law followed with consecutive two-out singles, and then Loudermelk quelled the rally by inducing a popout. The Blue Hose managed one hit during a scoreless second frame.
Loudermelk and DiMartino both pitched 1-2-3 innings during the third, leaving the score at 2-0.
Petik led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single, and went to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt. The Blue Hose stranded her by popping out and grounding out the close the stanza.
The Lady Flames doubled their advantage when Shivock hit a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. Shivock's fourth home run of the season made the score 4-0.
Presbyterian College trimmed the deficit to three, 4-1, on an RBI single by Tera Powell with two outs in the fifth inning. York hit a one-out double, and crossed the plate on Powell's base hit.
Loudermelk fashioned a 1-2-3 sixth inning, and Petik led off the bottom of the frame with a single. DiMartino then set down the next three Blue Hose batters to maintain the Lady Flames' three-run edge.
Kaylee West hit a single as the leadoff batter in the seventh, and then Strickland followed with a walk. Law's sacrifice bunt advanced each runner one base. Two good defensive plays brought Liberty's at bat to a close.
The hosts received a baserunner in the bottom of the seventh inning when York singled up the middle, but DiMartino finished off the victory by recording a pair of groundouts.
The Lady Flames and Blue Hose will complete their weekend series with a single game tomorrow at noon.
