Chanticleers Top Lady Flames, 7-2
The Liberty Lady Flames sustained a 7-2 defeat to Coastal Carolina during game two of a twin bill, Saturday at CCU Softball Field.
Liberty now holds a 14-26 record, including 5-9 in conference play. Coastal Carolina improves to 32-14 on the season, with a 9-5 Big South mark.
Kelby Allen went 2-for-3 for the Lady Flames, while Jill Stephens and Sammi Shivock both registered one hit and one RBI. Kelly Strickland batted 1-for-2.
Alyssa DiMartino (7-16) yielded six runs during 3 1/3 innings of work, while Chandler Ball allowed one run on one hit in 2 2/3 innings pitched.
Cacia Pierre went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Chelsea Pineda, Sara Rasley and Jessie Winans all hit homers.
Ashley Bagwell (9-6) went the distance, striking out seven batters while yielding two runs on five hits.
Liberty's first two batters of the game reached base, via walk and fielder's choice. Law sent the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Bagwell held the Lady Flames scoreless, with a groundout and a strikeout.
Pierre singled to lead off the bottom of the second inning. A sacrifice bunt sent the runner to second. Coastal Carolina stranded her at second on back-to-back groundouts to end the inning.
Bridgett Woods drew a leadoff walk in the third frame. Bagwell got three outs on two pitches, by way of a popout and an inning-ending double play.
The Chanticleers built a 5-0 lead with a five-run, two-out rally in the third inning. With two runners on and two outs, Quolas drove in Brooke Donovan with a single to left, and then Pierre drove a two-RBI single. Pineda followed with a two-run homer to right center.
Following a 1-2-3 Liberty fourth, Winans homered during the bottom of the stanza to extend the Chanticleers' lead to 6-0. Ball then came on in relief of DiMartino and registered the last two outs.
Strickland singled to left in the fifth inning, for Liberty's first hit of the game. Amber Donovan then drew a walk. Allen followed by singling to center, loading the bases with nobody out. Bagwell struck out the next two batters before Kiana Quolas made a sliding catch on a liner to rob Shivock of extra bases.
Ball retired the Chanticleers in order, keeping the score the same after five stanzas.
Coastal Carolina added a run during the sixth frame when Rasley hit a home run to center field, and the hosts took a 7-0 lead into the seventh inning.
The Lady Flames broke up the shutout bid in the seventh. Strickland reached first with a leadoff walk, and went to second on a groundout. A Chanticleers error put Strickland on third and Allen on first. Stephens hit an RBI double to drive in Strickland, and Shivock followed with a run-scoring single. Law flied out to left for the final out in Coastal Carolina's 7-2 win.
The Lady Flames and Chanticleers will finish their Big South series on Sunday, with the single game beginning at 1 p.m. at Coastal Carolina Softball Field.
