Liberty is Top Seed for Big South Men's Golf Championship
For the second year in a row, Liberty will enter the Big South Men's Golf Championship as the No. 1 seed, a three-day event that will be contested at The Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C., starting on Monday.
Last year, No. 1 seed Liberty captured its first-ever Big South men's golf title by 31 strokes, the second-largest margin of victory in conference championship history. The Flames finished the three-day event with an eight-under par 856 (290-277-289).
Seedings for this year's Big South Men's Golf Championship were once again based upon the latest Golfweek collegiate team rankings. The Flames bolstered their team ranking last week with their first team title of the year, taking first place at the East Carolina hosted River Landing Intercollegiate in Wallace, N.C.
Liberty will be next week's conference championship event No. 1 seed, as the team heads into the nine-team event with a Golfweek ranking of No. 33.
Campbell, who returns to the Big South this year after a 17-year hiatus, will be the No. 2 seed with a No. 76 Golfweek ranking. Coastal Carolina, who had its seven-year string of Big South titles snapped by Liberty last year, will be the No. 3 seed with a No. 77 ranking.
Charleston Southern is the No. 4 seed with a No. 105 ranking, followed by No. 5 seed Gardner-Webb (No. 127 ranking), who finished as the event runner-up last year.
Winthrop, who is serving as this year's host, is the No. 6 seed with a No. 140 ranking, followed by No. 7 seed Radford (No. 144), No. 8 seed High Point (No. 169 ranking).
Presbyterian College, who is ranked No. 155 in the latest Golfweek rankings, will again participate in the event on an invitation-only basis, as the team is not eligible for the conference championship until 2013 due to its transition process to Division I. PC's team and individual scores will not count in the official standings.
The Patriot Club is hosting the Big South Men's Golf Championship for the seventh time in eight years, as the course hosted the event in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The 2012 Big South Men's Golf Championship begins this weekend with a practice round on Sunday, April 15. The three-day, 54-hole event will be played April 16-18 and is free and open to the public.
In addition, fans can follow the action online via GolfStat's "Live Scoring" feature. The 2012 champion will receive the Big South's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. The conference championship schedule is as follows:
