Lady Flames Open Spring Season at Hokie Tournament

Gabrielle Shipe led the Lady Flames with 42 digs at the Hokie Spring Tournament, Saturday at Virginia Tech.

The Liberty volleyball team opened its 2012 spring season by competing in the Hokie Spring Tournament on April 7 at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.

Liberty faced Commonwealth opponents Radford and Virginia Tech on Saturday, playing a total of four two-set matches.

The Lady Flames split their first match against Radford, and then swept the Highlanders in the team's afternoon clash, 25-23, 25-19. Liberty attacked at a .307 clip during its second match against Radford, led by Loren Thomas, who hit .600 while sending down six kills.

Thomas paced the Lady Flames with 18 kills on the day, hitting .423. Gabrielle Shipe led the way with 42 digs, an average of 5.25 per set. Caroline Douglas totaled 16 kills, while Kendle Rollins and Ansley Gebben recorded 15 kills apiece.

The Lady Flames conclude their spring competition on April 21, when they play at a tournament at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
