Max McKay was one of three Liberty golfers to finish under par at last year's River Landing Intercollegiate.

The Flames will conclude their regular season in a familiar place with Liberty heading to Wallace, N.C., to participate in the 2012 River Landing Intercollegiate this weekend.

For the third year in a row, No. 39/37 Liberty (Golfweek/Golfstat) will use the East Carolina-hosted event at the River Landing Golf Club as its final tune-up for the Big South Men's Golf Championship.

Last year, the Flames found the par-72, 6,901-yard trek to their liking, with Liberty finishing second behind the host Pirates by three strokes. Liberty carded a 20-under par 844 (278-277-289), a mark that still stands as the program's third-lowest 54-hole total.

Robert Karlsson, Max McKay and Chase Marinell each found red numbers during the event to pace the way for the Flames.

Karlsson finished tied for fourth with a seven-under par 209 (68-71-70), McKay shared seventh place with a five-under par 211 (72-66-73) and Marinell finished in a three-way tie with a two-under par 214 (68-71-75).

This year's tournament field includes a stronger listing of teams. The 12-team field features five programs currently ranked inside the Top 50 by either Golfweek or Golfstat, led by No. 18/15 Duke, No. 37/30 East Carolina and the Flames.

The Blue Devils are coming off a second place showing last weekend at the Irish Creek Collegiate in New London, N.C. Duke has four runner-up finishes and a team title to its credit during the 2011-12 season (Duke's own Rod Myers Invitational during the fall).

This will be the fourth time the Flames have squared off against East Carolina this spring with Liberty bested the Pirates twice since January.

Liberty finished second to East Carolina's fourth-place finish at the spring-opening SeaBest Seafood Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla., and the Flames edged the Pirates by one spot (fourth and fifth place) at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto in Aiken, S.C.

The only time East Carolina finished ahead of Liberty this spring was when the Pirates captured the team title at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, N.C., where Liberty finished in sixth place.

The 12-team field at the River Landing Invitational will play 36 holes at the River Landing Golf Club on Friday, with the final 18 holes to be contested on Saturday.

The River Landing Golf Club, located 35 miles outside of Wilmington, N.C., has hosted 11 U.S. Open qualifiers and has been named the No. 1 North Carolina coastal golf course three times since 2004.
