Liberty Drops Game 2 to UNCG, 9-1
The Liberty softball team fell to the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 9-1, in five innings, during Wednesday's nightcap, and the visitors claimed a doubleheader sweep at Liberty Softball Field.
The Lady Flames now hold a 10-21 record following Wednesday's two setbacks. The Spartans have won three games in a row, improving their record to 16-22 on the campaign.
Liberty trailed, 4-1, after one inning, but UNCG added five runs in the third inning to gain the winning margin.
Kaylee West hit 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, moving her into seventh all-time at Liberty with 36 career doubles and tied for eighth with 89 career RBIs. Jenny Law scored Liberty's lone run, while Sammi Shivock and Katie Zavodny each had one hit.
Grace Nordan (0-2) allowed four runs on three hits during her first career start in the circle. Chandler Ball relieved for 2 1/3 innings, and Alyssa DiMartino finished the game with two innings of two-hit ball.
Four Spartans had multiple hits, as UNCG totaled 10 base hits. Heather Robb homered and had four RBIs, while Eileen Horsmon homered as well. Erica Navarette (6-8) earned her second win on the day, allowing one run on four hits while going the distance.
The Spartans loaded the bases with one out during their first time at bat. Bedwell plated UNCG's first run on a sacrifice fly, and then Robb made it 3-0 with a two-run double down the left field line. Dominique Madruga drove in Robb for a 4-0 edge, and then Ball entered the circle to get the final out.
Zavodny led off the bottom of the inning with a single, and Meredith Crisante walked to put runners on first and second. West then doubled down the left field line, driving in a run to make it 4-1. A strikeout and flyout quelled the Lady Flames' rally.
Ball worked around a one-out single, striking out the last two Spartans to end the top of the second inning. Shivock led off Liberty's second with a single to center, and she stole second. Navarette posted a strikeout, helping her end the inning.
The guests scored five runs in the third to take a 9-1 lead. Horsmon homered to right to open the inning, good for a 5-1 edge. After a walk to Bedwell, Robb hit a two-run round tripper. The guests then added two more runs to build an eight-run lead.
West collected a single with two outs in the bottom of the third, and was left on first when the inning came to a close.
DiMartino then came on in relief of Ball. The sophomore right-hander kept the Spartans off the board, leaving runners on second and third base in the fourth.
UNCG's batters went in order during the top of the fifth inning. Zavodny reached base on an error in the bottom of the fifth, and went to second on a groundout. Crisante flied out to center, bringing the game to a close via run rule.
The Lady Flames remain at home, where they will host Charleston Southern in a Big South series, Friday and Saturday. The first game of Friday's doubleheader is set to begin at 4 p.m., while Saturday's contest will start at 1 p.m.
