UNCG Rallies for 6-5 Victory Over Liberty
Liberty built a 5-1 lead after five innings, but five late runs by UNC Greensboro gave the Spartans a 6-5 victory over the Lady Flames during game one of a doubleheader, Wednesday at Liberty Softball Field.
With the win, UNCG advances to 15-22 on the season, while the Lady Flames are now 10-20.
Jenny Law extended her hitting streak to 10 games, going 2-for-4 with one double, a homer and a career-high five RBIs. Her five RBIs are the most by a Lady Flame in a single contest since Kelly Strickland drove in six against Norfolk State, April 20, 2011. Jill Stephens, Amber Donovan, Katie Zavodny and Marybeth Sciolino all scored one run apiece for Liberty.
Chandler Ball pitched the first four innings, allowing one run on two hits. She was relieved by Alyssa DiMartino (6-14), who sustained the loss.
Katelyn Bedwell batted 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs, while Aubrey Baldwin and Alex Emeterio both had two of UNCG's seven hits. Erica Navarette (4-8) earned the victory with two innings of no-hit relief.
After a two-out base hit by Alex Emeterio, Ball struck out Eileen Horsman for the third out during the Spartans' first time at bat. The Lady Flames then went in order in the bottom of the frame.
Both teams sent three batters to the plate during the second inning, as Ball and Mattson both recorded 1-2-3 innings.
Following a scoreless top half of the third, Liberty went ahead, 2-0, on a two-out double by Law. Sammi Shivock and Sciolino walked, putting runners on first and second. With two on and two outs, Law doubled to right center to give the Lady Flames a 2-0 lead.
Baldwin led off the fourth inning with a double to left center, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Bedwell drove Baldwin in by registering a sacrifice fly to slice the deficit to 2-1.
Megan Robinson singled during the bottom of the fourth, and then Cory Mattson retired the final two Lady Flames, sending the 2-1 game into the fifth inning.
After a leadoff walk to Dominique Madruga in the fifth, DiMartino entered the circle in relief of Ball. Two sacrifice bunts sent Madruga to third base, where she was left when DiMartino struck out Aisha Figueroa.
The Lady Flames tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Amber Donovan walked to lead off. Pinch runner Katie Zavodny stole second, and then Jill Stephens reached on an error. Jenny Law made it 5-1 with a three-run home run to left.
UNCG evened the score with four runs during the sixth inning. With runners on second and third, Bedwell drove in a pair to trim the margin to two, 5-3. A Liberty miscue brought in the Spartans' fourth run. Figueroa tied the game at 5-5, slicing a two-out, bases-loaded single to short.
Reliever Navarette retired the Lady Flames in order, and the game entered the seventh inning. Bedwell sent a two-out solo homer to left, good for UNCG's first lead of the game, 6-5. Ball re-entered the circle and struck out Heather Robb to bring Liberty up for the final time.
Liberty sent three batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, and all three recorded outs, ending the 6-5, UNCG victory.
