Wellman Tabbed Freshman of the Week
Liberty women's tennis player Nicola Wellman has been named the Big South's Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference this afternoon. The award, which covers matches played March 26-April 1, is the first of Wellman's career.
The Spring Hill, Fla., native's efforts are being recognized after she posted a combined 4-1 record last week, playing in four of Liberty's five matches. Wellman helped the squad stretch a win streak to six matches before falling to Winthrop, Saturday.
Opening against Morgan State, the freshman posted a 2-0 record as Liberty downed the Bears, 7-0. Wellman teamed with fellow Floridian Annisha Domenech in the No. 2 doubles match, with the duo defeating Jasmine Edwards and Tiffany Hughes, 8-2. In singles, Wellman took the first set in extra games, 7-5, before closing strong against Edwards again, 6-1.
Wellman added another straight-set singles win in the team's 7-0 win over Norfolk State, as she knocked off Maryna Kariuk, 6-1, 6-0. Wellman was slated to participate in doubles, but the Spartans were forced to default the No. 3 match.
The freshman then provided an important victory in the Lady Flames' conference contest against Campbell, providing the match-clinching singles win in the No. 6 slot. With all other matches final and the score tied, 3-3, Wellman defeated Anais Gomar, 7-5, 6-3.
Wellman's sole loss of the week came against Winthrop, as Liberty's win streak was snapped.
Liberty wraps up its regular-season schedule this week. On Thursday, the Lady Flames travel to take on James Madison, while they host UNC Asheville, Friday, at 1 p.m.
