Flames Close March by Hosting Winthrop
In its final match for the month of March, the Liberty men's tennis team will play host to Winthrop for a Big South contest, Saturday, at 1 p.m. at the Hershey Tennis Courts.
The Flames currently stand at 13-5, which is tied for the program's second most wins in a season. The 2009 team finished with 13 wins, while the program record is 16, set in 1990, before the program became NCAA Division I.
Liberty continues to get a strong effort throughout the singles lineup. At No. 1, Siim Tuus has led the way with an 11-5 mark, including a 3-1 record in Big South play. Shea Thomas and Giancarlo Lemmi have held down the next two slots, posting seven and six wins, in those respective matches.
The final three positions in Liberty's lineup have seen a variety of rotations, with many successes. Many of the victories have come from the Flames' freshmen, who are now 27-10 in singles matches this season. Wayne Harrell and Dillon Segur have won 10 matches apiece, while Jorge Azuero is undefeated at 7-0.
In doubles, two Liberty duos will seek their 10th win of the season, Saturday. Tuus and Lemmi, and Thomas and Tristan Stayt have both notched nine wins this season.
Winthrop will come to Lynchburg owning an 8-11 record, having lost its last two matches against Davidson and conference opponent UNC Asheville. The Eagles are 1-2 in Big South play this season, with their sole win coming against Gardner-Webb by a 5-2 margin.
Yuta Hirokawa has paced Winthrop in singles wins this season, posting an 11-6 mark while playing mainly in the No. 3 slot. Dylan Comerford is nearing double-digits with nine wins, while two more Eagles have posted seven wins, apiece.
Hirokawa and Luka Stanic are the only doubles duo with a winning record, at 9-6 in No. 2 and No. 3 matches, including a 2-1 mark in Big South contests. Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin have played each match at No. 1 doubles, going 6-10 this season.
Live updates will be available for the Flames match as they host Winthrop, Saturday afternoon.
