Richard Clinches 4-3 Victory Over Radford
Sophomore Cameron Richard clinched Liberty's fourth consecutive victory with her sixth straight singles win, Tuesday, as the Lady Flames downed Radford, 4-3, in a Big South road meeting.
The Lady Flames are now 8-10 and 2-3 in Big South action. Radford's loss is just its fifth of the season, as they now stand at 12-5. The Highlanders are also 2-3 in conference matches.
Radford claimed the first doubles match in the No. 2 slot, but Liberty gained the early 1-0 advantage behind a pair of tightly contested doubles victories in the final two matches. Richard and Brittany Yang knocked off Mia Drobnjak and Taylor Newman, 8-5, in the lead match. Carol Lobel and Jessie Boda then secured the opening point, downing Petra Dajevic and Gemma Valls, 8-6, in the No. 3 contest.
Lobel then gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage, taking a straight-set victory over Newman in the No. 5 slot, 6-1, 6-2. Alexandra Sheeran nearly mirrored Lobel's performance, as she took the lead singles match from Dajevic, 6-2, 6-2, to up Liberty's lead to 3-0.
The homestanding Highlanders got on the board with a victory from Valls in the No. 4 slot, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1.
Each of the three remaining matches were forced into a third set, but Richard took care of the match's final outcome by downing Hannah Crawford in the No. 2 match, as Liberty held the 4-1 advantage. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, Richard settled in during the final two sets, taking them 6-4, 6-3, for the win.
The Highlanders closed by taking both the No. 3 and No. 6 matches in three sets for the final tally of 4-3.
"I'm very proud of our girls," stated Liberty Head Coach Chris Johnson. "This is a big win on the road and it couldn't have come at a better time."
The Lady Flames play their fourth match in as many days, tomorrow, when they host Norfolk State. Start time is set for 2:30 p.m., and live updates will be available.
