Flames Blank PC in Conference Clash
With rain threatening play, Liberty swept through singles play to begin Sunday's Big South match at Presbyterian College, as they moved on to win, 7-0.
The Flames are now 11-5 for 2012 and level their Big South record at 2-2 with the victory. The shutout is Liberty's fifth of the season. Meanwhile, PC evens its overall record to 10-10 and is 0-2 in conference meetings.
Liberty used straight-set victories in five of the singles matches, while Siim Tuus fought for a three-set win in the lead match. Each of the first two sets were forced into a tiebreaker, with both Tuus and Rafael Berghaus claiming one apiece. Tuus then closed strong, taking the final set, 6-1, for his team-leading 11th singles win this spring.
Shea Thomas and Giancarlo Lemmi were forced into extra games in their second sets, but both Flames managed to close for the straight set victories. Thomas knocked off William O'Connell, 6-3, 7-5, in the No. 2 slot, while Lemmi downed Zachary Sprouse, 6-2, 7-6, in the No. 3 contest.
Dillon Segur and Mandeep Yadav continued the Flames' victories in the No. 4 and No. 5 matches, as both surrendered only three games to their Blue Hose opponents. Segur outhit Andrew Brigham, 6-2, 6-1, while Yadav defeated Nathan Crocker, 6-3, 6-0.
Freshman Jorge Azuero continued his stellar play in the lower half of Liberty's lineup, as he knocked off Gonzalo Asis, 6-2, 7-5, upping his singles record to 6-0 this season.
With the match already clinched, 6-0, Liberty tacked on the doubles point behind wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. Tuus and Lemmi handed Berghaus and O'Connell their first doubles defeat of the season, winning the lead match, 8-5. Thomas and Stayt defeated Sprouse and Brigham, 8-3. The two Liberty tandems now have eight and seven wins this season.
The Flames return to action tomorrow, as they welcome Morgan State to Liberty's Hershey Tennis Courts for a 2 p.m. meeting.
