Lady Flames Down PC for Big South Win
Playing singles matches first due to the threat of rain, the Liberty women's tennis team claimed five of the six contests en route to its first Big South victory of 2012, a 5-2 decision over Presbyterian College.
The Lady Flames improve to 6-10 for the season and 1-3 in Big South matches, while PC falls to 7-9 and 0-3 in conference. Liberty has now won five of its last six matches.
The first four contests to go final all went in favor of the visiting Lady Flames, as they clinched the team victory early on.
Alexandra Sheeran claimed the No. 1 match for her third singles win on the season, downing Paige Oelke, 6-2, 6-2.
Cameron Richard notched her fourth straight singles win, defeating Cara Caruso in the No. 2 slot, 6-1, 6-2.
Freshman Brittany Yang continued the Lady Flames' early momentum by taking the No. 3 match over Greer Ransom, 6-3, 6-1. The Newnan, Ga., native now has nine singles wins on the season.
Rebekah Jenkins secured the Lady Flames' victory with a win in the No. 4 position of head coach Chris Johnson's lineup. The sophomore downed Patricia Alves, 6-1, 6-2, for the win.
Annisha Dominich added the final team point for Liberty in the No. 6 match, as she only gave up one game to Lindsay Krause, taking the decision, 6-1, 6-0.
The hosts picked up a win in the No. 5 slot, in addition to the doubles point en route to the final 5-2 margin. Jenkins and Sheeran earned the sole win in doubles for Liberty, taking the No. 2 match, 8-0.
The Lady Flames are scheduled to face Radford next, in another Big South meeting. Liberty will travel to take on the Higlanders, Tuesday, for a 2:30 p.m. start.
