Lady Flames Earn Doubleheader Sweep of Runnin' Bulldogs

Bridgett Woods went 2-for-3, with her team-leading fourth home run of the season and three RBIs in an 8-3 win over Gardner-Webb.

Liberty registered six extra-base hits, earning a doubleheader sweep of Gardner-Webb with an 8-3 victory in game two, Saturday at Varsity Field.

The Lady Flames advanced their record to 8-15, 2-1 in Big South play. Liberty had 10 hits, recording four doubles, a triple and one home run during the second contest. Gardner-Webb is now 13-17 with an 0-2 mark in conference competition.

Liberty scored four runs in the second inning, and added three insurance runs after the Runnin' Bulldogs had sliced the lead to two, 5-3, in the fourth inning.

Meredith Crisante went 2-for-4 with a career-high two doubles, driving in two runs. Bridgett Woods batted 2-for-3, hitting her team-leading fourth home run and posting three RBIs. Amber Donovan had a double in a 2-for-4 game, and Kaylee West hit her 34th career double to enter Liberty's top 10. Jenny Law hit her first collegiate triple during the game.

Alyssa DiMartino (5-10) earned her second relief win on the day, pitching the final four and one-third innings while giving up one run on just four hits.

For the game, Gardner-Webb recorded nine hits, including two each from Savannah Burns and Amanda Gomes. Lindsea Hutchinson had a leadoff home run in the second inning. Cindy Boomhower drew the loss, falling to 5-4 on the season by yielding four runs, none earned, on two hits.

The Lady Flames took a 4-0 lead, plating four runs with a two-out rally in the top of the second inning. Kaylee West sent a double to left center, and later scored on a throwing error by Gardner-Webb. After a walk to Kelly Strickland, Woods followed with a three-run home run to build Liberty's advantage to four.

Hutchison slugged a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the second, trimming Gardner-Webb's deficit to 4-1. The Runnin' Bulldogs stranded Gomes after she singled, and the game went to the third inning.

Liberty responded quickly, as Donovan drove in Kelby Allen with a double in the top of the third. Donovan's team-leading eighth double of the season made it 5-1, and the score remained the same to the bottom half.

Gardner-Webb posted back-to-back singles during its third time at bat. After Chandler Ball fanned McKenzie Morenus for the second out, she hit Hutchinson to fill the bases. DiMartino then entered the circle to replace Ball. Gomes singled, driving in the Runnin' Bulldogs' second run. Savage grounded out to end the third frame.

Following a scoreless Liberty half of the fourth, Gardner-Webb registered back-to-back singles to open the bottom half. Melinda Dulkowski plated a run by grounding out, and then Burns popped to first. The Lady Flames led, 5-3, going into the fifth inning.

Crisante hit a double to open the sixth inning, and crossed the plate on a one-out triple by Law, extending the Lady Flames' edge to three at 6-3. Woods assisted on all three outs in the bottom of the sixth, as Gardner-Webb went in order.

Liberty tacked on two runs in the seventh. With runners on second and third and two outs, Crisante doubled to the gap, driving in Katie Zavodny and Jill Stephens for an 8-3 lead.

DiMartino closed out the victory with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, with the hosts grounding out to first base for all three outs.

The Lady Flames and Runnin' Bulldogs will conclude their Big South series tomorrow, with a 2 p.m. start time at Varsity Field.
