Flames Down Arizona State in Match Play Event
Updated Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship bracket
No. 7 seed Liberty won four of its five matches, including three by sizeable margins, to down No. 14 seed Arizona State during the third round of the 2012 Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship on Monday.
With the 4-and-1 victory over the Sun Devils, Liberty advances to tomorrow's ninth-place match against No. 8 seed Iowa. The Hawkeyes were also victorious on the day, advancing after a 3-and-2 victory over Colorado State.
Tomorrow's championship match will feature No. 1 seed Arkansas and No. 3 seed Duke, the event's defending team champion.
The Razorbacks made quick work of No. 5 seed Chattanooga, winning 5-and-0, while the Blue Devils needed an extra hole to upset No. 2 seed California. Tim Gornick secured Duke's second straight trip to the championship match by beating Keelan Kilpatrick on the first extra hole of play.
Liberty's first victory of the game came from Robert Karlsson, who easily defeated Spencer Fletcher, 8-and-6, to start the Flames toward their victory over the two-time national championship program.
The Flames' next win came from Chase Marinell, who defeated Stan Gautier, 6-and-5, and staked Liberty to a two-point lead. With their large victories, Karlsson and Marinell both move to 3-0 at this year's match play event.
Liberty wrapped up its second straight team victory when Niklas Lindstrom defeated Cameron Palmer, 5-and-4.
Starting on the par-5, No. 13 hole, Lindstrom quickly jumped out to a 1 up lead after he posted a par and Palmer went long of the green and recorded a bogey.
The score remained the same for the next five holes. Lindstrom found the No. 18 green in regulation, but Palmer was short and spun his shot back into the water and conceded the hole.
Lindstrom widened his lead on the next hole, thanks to solid play from the bunker. The sophomore hit his approach wide right into the bunker, but Lindstrom was able to get up-and-down for par on No. 1 to move to 3 up through seven holes.
Two holes later, Lindstrom birdied his second par 5 in a row, as he reached the 577-yard hole in two and was able to two putt for birdie to move 4 up.
The pair swapped holes on No. 4 and No. 5 before Lindstrom was able to move to 5 up on the 606-yard, par-5, No. 7 hole, despite a bogey. Solid bunker play continued to come from Lindstrom, as the Swedish golfer wrapped up the match with an up-and-down on No. 8 for par.
Liberty's final victory came from Ian McConnell, who picked up his first win at the Match Play Championship with a 2-and-1 win over Mathias Schjoelberg.
Liberty's lone setback on the day did not come easily for Arizona State, the collegiate program of World Hall of Fame golfer Phil Mickelson. Max McKay trailed Austin Quick by five with five holes to play.
McKay continued to keep the match alive with victories on holes No. 7, 8 and 9, but he finally succumbed to Quick, 3-and-1, after his approach on No. 10 was long and the junior was not able to get up and down on No. 10.
The Flames and the Hawkeyes, and the rest of the 16-team field, will return to The Concession Golf Club, tomorrow morning, for a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
