Despite Late Liberty Rally, Buffalo Beats Lady Flames, 6-3
Liberty rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but was unable to overcome a 6-1 deficit, as Buffalo earned a 6-3 victory over the Lady Flames, Friday at Baylor's Getterman Stadium.
The Lady Flames and Bulls have identical 6-11 records after today's game. Buffalo has ended its three-game losing streak, while Liberty's winless streak extends to seven.
Five runs by the Bulls during the first inning proved to be the difference, as the Lady Flames battled back for the rest of the contest.
Liberty scored three runs on four hits, getting singles from Jenny Law and Jill Stephens and doubles from Sammi Shivock and Kaylee West. Shivock registered two RBIs, while Law drove in a run and scored once during the game. Alyssa DiMartino (3-8) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on five hits. Chandler Ball pitched five and one third innings of relief.
Tori Speckman tossed a complete-game four-hitter for the Bulls, advancing her record to 5-4. Buffalo recorded 10 hits, with Holly Luciano, Caitlin Dekker and Sammi Gallardo posting two hits apiece.
Buffalo surged ahead with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. With nobody on and two out, the Bulls strung together five straight base hits. Buffalo received an RBI single from Gallardo and a two-run single from Andi Saucier. Ball then entered the circle for the Lady Flames. Pettine made it 5-0, singling to left center to drive in Saucier. Ball fanned Luciano to end the inning.
Speckman hit Kelly Strickland with a pitch after two outs during the second, but Strickland was erased on a fielder's choice for the final out.
Buffalo tacked on a third-inning tally, extending its edge to 6-0. Kristin Waldron walked and then stole second. After advancing to third, Waldron scored on an illegal pitch. Liberty kept Buffalo off the board for the rest of the inning, sending it to the fourth inning.
The Lady Flames cracked the scoring column in the fifth. Kaylee West doubled to the right center gap, giving Liberty its first base hit of the afternoon. West went to third on a groundout, and was driven in by Law. Law's RBI single trimmed the deficit to five, 6-1.
Ball worked around a leadoff single by Gallardo, as the Bulls bounced into three straight groundouts and the score remained 6-1.
Stephens recorded a pinch-hit base hit as the first batter in the sixth. A pair of flyouts and a fielder's choice ended Liberty's sixth time at bat.
A scoreless sixth by the Bulls brought the Lady Flames to bat for the final time. Meredith Crisante was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the seventh. Pinch hitter Megan Robinson also reached base, and then Shivock drove in Robinson and Law with a double to make it 6-3. Speckman fanned Sydnei Lester to seal the victory for Buffalo.
The Lady Flames are currently playing against No. 15 Baylor in their final game this week.
