In a game that looked destined for overtime, the Liberty Lady Flames powered by a pair of late goals dropped the Charleston Southern Lady Buccaneers, 2-0, in the Big South Conference opener for the Lady Flames, Saturday afternoon, at CSU Soccer Field.
After each team had plenty of opportunities through the first 85 minutes of play, with neither team able to put any points on the board, Liberty broke through when Ashley Braam (So., F, Grand Rapids, Mich.) headed a pass from Tanya Payne (So., D, Prescott, Ariz.) into the back of the net giving the Lady Flames a 1-0 lead and Braam her second tally of the season.
Down late in the game, Charleston Southern pulled everyone up on the attack, but goalkeeper Sonia Rodriguez (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) held strong, stopping a shot by Lady Buccaneers Lindsey Trexler to keep the Lady Flames in front.

Liberty put the game away with less than a minute remaining as an Alaina Hohnarth (Jr., MF, Hamburg, N.J.) corner kick found Payne who added the insurance goal with her first goal of the season.

On the afternoon, Rodriguez made a total of three saves on the afternoon in recording her first shutout of her collegiate career, while Charleston Southern's goalkeeper Miki Wilson recorded three saves.

"A very typical Big South match with both teams fighting very hard, playing very scrappy and one team just came out on top of the other today," Liberty head coach James Price stated after the match.  "We did not deserve to win with our performance in the first half, but we turned it around at halftime and were the better team in the second half."

"I thought Tanya Payne played very well throughout the day today," continued Price.  "She was very consistent and the goal and the assist were due for her."

"Mandee Judd (Jr., MF, Front Royal, Va.) continues to play very well, controlling the ball in the middle of the field and attacking when needed."

With the win, the Lady Flames move to 4-3-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the Big South, while Charleston Southern falls to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the Big South.

The Lady Flames take the field again on Tuesday night when they host intrastate rival Radford in a Big South Conference match.  The contest begins at 7 p.m. at the Liberty Soccer Field.
