Melinda Bendik's school-record 192-2 heave in the women's hammer netted her the Big South Women's Field Athlete of the Week award.

After enjoying a most successful opening to her final collegiate outdoor track & field season, Liberty redshirt senior Melinda Bendik has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Field Athlete of the Week.

Bendik won the women's hammer throw competition by more than 17 feet last Friday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, reaching a school-record distance of 192-2 on her best effort of the day. Friday's performance eclipsed her previous school mark of 183-6, which Bendik set at the 2010 ECAC Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

Bendik's 192-2 effort not only qualified her for this year's ECAC meet, but it also ranks No. 1 in the East Region and No. 5 in the nation through the early stages of the 2012 outdoor campaign.

Liberty will compete in its second straight meet at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C., this Thursday through Saturday. The Shamrock Invitational will get underway with the heptathlon and decathlon Thursday at 11:45 a.m.

Bendik will face some stiff competition this weekend in the women's hammer, in former Coastal Carolina standout Amber Campbell. A 2008 Olympian for Team USA, Campbell will compete against Bendik and seven other collegiate throwers in the Amber Campbell Invitational section of the women's hammer, Friday at 9 a.m.
