Liberty Falls to Sam Houston State, 3-0
The Liberty softball team fell to Sam Houston State, 3-0, Wednesday, as the homestanding Bearkats hit two home runs in the victory.
Sam Houston State has won its last three games in a row, improving to 4-13 on the season, while Liberty is now 6-10 after its sixth straight setback.
The Bearkats' Tomi Garrison (3-5) tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out five and walking one. Kim Damian went 2-for-3 with a home run, and teammate Sarah Allison added a late two-run blast.
For Liberty, Alyssa DiMartino (3-7) allowed three runs on six hits, and led the team with five assists in five innings pitched. Jill Stephens broke up the no-hitter with a single in the fifth inning, and Amber Donovan drew a walk in the first.
Sam Houston State jumped ahead on a leadoff home run by Damian to the opposite field, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. DiMartino worked out of a jam with two runners on, leaving the score 1-0 after one inning.
Garrison allowed one Lady Flame to reach base over the first four innings, walking Donovan in the opening stanza. Alysaa Coggins robbed Sammi Shivock with a diving catch at second base to end the third frame.
Damian led off the third inning with her second hit of the game, a single. The Bearkats left runners on second and third when Shelbi Tucker lined out to center for the third out.
DiMartino kept the Bearkat batters in check with her defense in the fourth inning, recording a 1-3 groundout and assisting on an inning-ending double play. Sam Houston State's lead remained at 1-0 through four innings.
Stephens gave the Lady Flames their first hit of the game, singling with two out in the top of the fifth frame. Jenny Law then drove a liner that Tori Benavidez tracked down in left center field, sending the game into the bottom of the fifth.
Calli Wood sent a double to the wall as the first Bearkat batter in the fifth. Sam Houston State had runners on second and third with one out, but Liberty defused the rally, keeping the score 1-0.
Allison gave Sam Houston State a pair of insurance runs when she hit a two-run homer to left center field in the sixth inning. Chandler Ball then entered the pitching circle for the Lady Flames. A double play ended the sixth, with the Bearkats holding a 3-0 advantage.
Garrison retired the Lady Flames in order in the seventh to close out the one-hitter.
Liberty softball will conclude its time in Texas with a pair of games in Waco on Friday, beginning with a 4 p.m. ET game against Buffalo. The Lady Flames will then face No. 15 Baylor following the Buffalo contest.
