2-Run Rally Keys 2-0 Texas State Victory
Texas State used a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to provide the winning margin in a 2-0 win over visiting Liberty in today's nightcap at Bobcat Field.
The Lady Flames have lost five contests in a row, and are now 6-9, while the Bobcats won their fifth straight game to improve to 14-10 on the campaign.
Three-time NFCA All-Region player Chandler Hall (7-5) pitched a one-hit shutout, allowing two baserunners while striking out seven Lady Flames in seven innings pitched. The Bobcats received RBI base hits from Brooke Baker and Shelby Carnline.
For Liberty, Alyssa DiMartino and the Lady Flames defense held the Bobcats to two runs on eight hits. Bridgett Woods singled in the third inning, and Amber Donovan walked during the seventh inning to account for Liberty's baserunners.
Hall retired the first eight batters she faced, striking out five Lady Flames during the opening three innings.
The Bobcats threatened in the bottom of the second inning, putting runners on second and third with one out. A couple of solid defensive plays by Kelly Strickland kept the game scoreless.
Woods singled on a swinging bunt after two outs in the third inning, giving Liberty its first runner. Sammi Shivock grounded out to second base as the last out during the top of the third.
A 1-2-3 third inning by Texas State extended DiMartino's streak to five consecutive batters retired.
The Lady Flames went in order during their fourth time at bat. Texas State then staged a two-out rally, loading the bases on a single a walk and a catcher's interference. Megan Parten hit into a fielder's choice, continuing the 0-0 ledger into the fifth inning.
The Bobcats registered back-to-back hits with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but Strickland threw out Jordan Masek on a grounder for the third out.
After Woods' third-inning single, Hall set down the next 11 Lady Flames, spanning the third through seventh innings.
Allison Snow stroked a double off of the right field wall during the Bobcat sixth. Katie Zavodny made a diving catch on a sinking liner by Brooke Keel for the second out. Canline doubled to right center, sending Snow home with the game's first run. Baker sent an RBI single to short, giving Texas State a 2-0 lead after six innings.
Donovan drew a one-out walk in the Liberty seventh, and Hall got Kelby Allen to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play to end the contest.
The Lady Flames continue their stay in Texas, heading to Huntsville tomorrow to take on Sam Houston State. Game time is set for 3 p.m. Eastern Time, for the single game.
