Texas State Posts Shutout Win Over Lady Flames
The Liberty softball team faced defending Southland Conference champion Texas State on Tuesday, and fell by an 8-0 score in six innings during game one of the doubleheader.
The Bobcats advance to 13-10 on the season, winning their fourth in a row, while the Lady Flames (6-8) sustained their fourth consecutive defeat.
Katie Zavodny recorded two out of Liberty's three hits on the afternoon, and also stole a base. Kelby Allen hit a double in the fourth inning, and Amber Donovan was hit by a pitch to account for Liberty's base runners. Chandler Ball (3-3) allowed three runs on five hits in four and two-thirds innings pitched and took the loss.
Three Texas State batters had two hits apiece, while Haley Lemons doubled and drove in three runs. Selena and Anna Hernandez both posted two hits and two runs. Anne Marie Taylor is 7-4 after tossing a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
The Bobcats scored one run in the bottom of the first inning. Selena Hernadez drew a leadoff walk and stole second. After a bunt base hit by Baker, Anna Hernandez grounded into a double play, scoring the runner from third for a 1-0 Texas State lead.
After a three-batter Liberty second inning, the Bobcats received a pair of baserunners with two outs. Ball got Masek to foul out to Strickland, ending the second frame.
Taylor allowed one Liberty batter to reach base over the first three innings, hitting Donovan with a pitch in the first stanza.
Selena Hernandez led off the third inning by singling to center, but was tagged out on a stolen base attempt. The remaining Bobcats went in order, and the 1-0 score stood going into the fourth.
Zavodny recorded a bunt single as the first batter in the fourth inning. She got thrown out trying to steal second. Allen then sent a two-out double into the right field corner. A groundout to short provided the final out, keeping the total at 1-0.
With runners on second and third and one out in the Texas State half of the fourth, Allison Snow singled to right to drive in Brooke Keel for the Bobcats' second run. Texas State stranded two runners, as two pop outs to Shivock closed the inning.
Texas State rallied with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, adding an insurance run. Brooke Baker walked, and then Anna Hernandez singled. Lemons plated Baker with an RBI double. DiMartino then came on in relief of Ball, and Shivock made a leaping catch to secure the third out.
Liberty got a base hit a stolen base from Zavodny during the sixth inning. Taylor then closed the inning with her 10th strikeout of the afternoon. The Bobcats ended the game in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs on four two-out base hits to seal the 8-0 victory.
