Monmouth Holds On for 2-1 Win Against Liberty
Monmouth took a 2-1 lead with a seventh-inning home run, and held off a rally by Liberty in the bottom of the inning to hang on for the win in the teams' second meeting on Sunday in College Station.
The Lady Flames now hold a 6-7 record, following three setbacks at the Aggie Invitational this weekend. The Hawks are 5-3 after going 2-2 at the Aggie Invitational.
Both teams scored one run during the fifth inning, and Monmouth went ahead on a seventh-inning solo home run by Christine Scherr.
Kelby Allen registered two of Liberty's six hits, while Bridgett Woods hit a triple and scored in the fifth inning. Amber Donovan drew three walks, a season-high for the Lady Flames. Alyssa DiMartino (3-5) went the distance, allowing one earned run on six hits while tying a career high with four strikeouts.
Monmouth scored a run on one of Liberty's three errors in the contest. Scherr and Chelsea Parocki both recorded two hits, while Lauren Sulick (4-0) yielded one run on six hits.
Liberty rallied with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Donovan walked, and Allen followed with a single to center. A fielder's choice ended the stanza.
The Lady Flames turned a double play to record the final two outs of Monmouth's half of the second inning. Kelly Strickland then sliced a single to right to lead off the bottom half. Three ground balls ensued, producing the final three outs of the inning.
In the third inning, another two-out rally for the Lady Flames produced a scoring opportunity. With runners on first and third and two outs, Crisante laid down a bunt, and was narrowly thrown out at first base.
The Hawks recorded two hits during the fourth inning, but DiMartino got three Monmouth hitters to fly out, ending the top of the frame. Liberty went in order, leaving a 0-0 tie through four.
Monmouth scored the game's first run in the top of the fifth. With Jenna Jaquish on first, Scherr reached on a bunt, and Jaquish came around to score on a throwing error. Scherr was stranded on a flyout, and Monmouth held a 1-0 led after four and a half frames.
Woods led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple. Sammi Shivock drove her in with a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1-1, and that score stood when the third out was recorded.
DiMartino worked around a two-base error in the sixth inning, leaving Kayleena Flores on third when Kate Kuzma flied out to right. Meredith Crisante singled with one out in Liberty's sixth time at bat, but was erased on a fielder's choice before Kaylee West grounded out to the pitcher for the third out.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Scherr sent a long ball over the fence, putting Monmouth back ahead, 2-1. The Lady Flames came up in the bottom of the seventh trailing by one run.
Wood drew a walk after one out, and Shivock sent her to second with a solid single. Donovan then walked, filling the bases with two outs. Allen slashed a sinking liner to right, and a charging Flores snagged it to end the 2-1 Monmouth win.
The Aggie Invitational has concluded, with six out of a scheduled 10 games being played. The Lady Flames continue their Texas trip by traveling to San Marcos, Texas for a doubleheader on Tuesday against Texas State. Game one is set to begin at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
