USC Upstate Quiets Liberty Bats in Victory
The host USC Upstate Spartans defeated Liberty, 16-0, in five innings on Saturday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tournament. The loss ended the Lady Flames' five-game winning streak, which included five straight 10-hit games.
The Lady Flames (5-3) registered a 3-1 record on the weekend, while the Spartans won their 10th straight game to open the season. USC Upstate plays once more Saturday and then takes on La Salle on Sunday to close out the tournament.
Liberty received one baserunner on the afternoon, on a single by Meredith Crisante in the first inning. Crisante also stole a base, her third steal of the season. Chandler Ball yielded five earned runs during one inning of work, drawing the loss to set her record at 3-2 on the year.
The Spartans recorded 16 runs on 16 hits, with five players recording multiple hits. Shellie Robinson homered twice and drove in five runs, and was one of three Spartans with three hits. Hannah Alexander allowed one hit in four innings, earning her seventh win of the season. USC Upstate has not yielded an earned run so far in 2012.
With two outs in the top of the first inning, Crisante singled on a bunt. She stole second, but was left there as Alexander struck out Amber Donovan to end the Lady Flames' half of the first.
Alexander retired 10 batters in a row, spanning the first through fourth innings, and then Sam Poarch got the Lady Flames out in order during the fifth inning.
USC Upstate took a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With two on and nobody out, Robinson cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right center. Ball struck out the last two USC Upstate batters to keep the score at 3-0.
The Spartans added six runs during the second stanza. Janna Lewis plated Lindsay Kelly, and then Robinson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Alyssa DiMartino came on in relief of Ball, and Cheyenne Griffin doubled in two runs for a 7-0 Spartan lead. Butler pushed the hosts' edge to 9-0 with an RBI groundout. DiMartino recorded the final two outs to close the second inning.
The hosts scored six more tallies during the third inning to build their lead to 15-0, receiving four RBI singles among their seven base hits during the frame.
Robinson led off the bottom of the fourth with her second home run of the game, and USC Upstate held a 16-0 advantage after four frames.
The Lady Flames have concluded their time at the USC Upstate Tournament, posting a 3-1 record on the weekend. Liberty will next compete on March 6 at 2 p.m., as the team welcomes East Tennessee State to Lynchburg for the Lady Flames' home opener.
