Liberty Wins 5th Straight, 10-1 Over La Salle
With six first-inning runs, Liberty earned a 10-1 victory over La Salle in five innings, on Saturday at the USC Upstate Tournament.
The Lady Flames (5-2) have won five games in a row, while La Salle opens the season at 0-2. Liberty's winning streak is its longest since winning eight straight games, April 13-20, 2011. Liberty registered 12 hits on Saturday, and has recorded at least 10 hits in each of its last five games.
Alyssa DiMartino (2-1) pitched a complete-game two-hitter, striking out three, and allowing no hits after the first inning. Bridgett Woods hit her third home run of the season, drove in two runs and scored two runs. Meredith Crisante went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Kelby Allen drove in a run during a 2-for-3 game. Nine different Lady Flames earned a hit, and nine scored a run.
For La Salle, Linnette Siedler singled and Alicia Aughton had an RBI. Kristin Travers took the loss, allowing 10 runs, seven earned on 11 hits in four and one-thirds innings.
Liberty jumped ahead with six first-inning runs, as the first six Lady Flames all reached base and scored a run. Crisante singled in Sammi Shivock for a 1-0 lead. Jenny Law hit a bases-loaded single to plate Zavodny, still with no outs. West drove in a run with a base hit, and Donovan scored on the play. Law scored on a wild pitch, and then Allen made it 6-0 with an RBI single. A double play ended the inning.
The Explorers inched closer, with one run in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter Siedler singled, and crossed the plate on a base hit by Aughton, drawing La Salle to within five, 6-1. DiMartino struck out a pair during the inning.
The score remained the same, 6-1, throughout the second and third innings as pitchers DiMartino and Travers both settled in.
Woods led off the fourth inning with her third home run of the season, restoring Liberty's six-run lead, at 7-1. Travers worked around a hit by Crisante, keeping the score the same through the top of the fourth inning.
Hanna Niichols opened the fifth inning with her first career hit. After a walk, Allen loaded the bases with a single to left. Liberty then scored two more runs, as Woods reached on an error. With two outs, Crisante drove in Nordan for Liberty's 10th run of the game.
One Explorer reached in the bottom of the fifth, but DiMartino retired the side, and the game ended after five innings with Liberty prevailing, 10-1.
Liberty closes out its participation at the USC Upstate Tournament with a 2 p.m. matchup against the host Spartans this afternoon. USC Upstate brings a 9-0 record into the game against Liberty, and has not allowed an earned run so far this season.
