Flames Sweep Weekly BSC Men's Tennis Awards
The Liberty Flames have claimed both of the Big South's weekly men's tennis honors, with Giancarlo Lemmi being named Player of the Week and Wayne Harrell being selected as the Freshman of the Week. The conference announced the awards, which cover matches played Feb. 6-13, earlier today. Both are being recognized with the respective awards for the first time in their careers.
Lemmi and Harrell's recognition comes after the Flames split their pair of matches last week, to now hold a 3-2 record. Liberty's win came against Georgia Southern in a match played at East Carolina's Indoor Tennis Center and improves the team to 2-0 in neutral-site matches.
Lemmi posted a 3-1 record in the Flames' two matches and now holds a combined mark of 8-2 this season. The junior held down the middle of head coach Chris Johnson's singles lineup, posting straight-set wins over ECU's Niels Cleeran (6-2, 6-4) and Georgia Southern's Albert Codina Sala (6-2, 6-2) in the No. 4 and No. 3 matches, respectively. Lemmi and Harrell continued their success as a doubles team against ECU, posting an 8-5 win over the Pirates' Cleeran and David Masciorini in the No. 2 match, to improve to 3-0 as a duo.
Harrell kept his strong freshman season moving, also posting a 3-1 record last week for the Flames. In singles play, Harrell posted a 2-0 mark in the No. 6 position. Against ECU, Harrell's opponent Masciorini claimed the first set, 6-0, but the freshman picked up the next two sets, 6-3, 6-4 to claim the victory. The East Windsor, Conn., native maintained a perfect singles week by defeating Georgia Southern's Sebastien Felt, 6-2, 6-3. As previously mentioned, Harrell teamed with Lemmi to pick up a doubles win against ECU.
Lemmi and Harrell's sole defeat of the week came in the No. 2 doubles match against Georgia Southern, which was forced into extra games. The Eagles' pair of Alain Garrido and Andrew Dromsky edged out the Flames' duo, 9-7.
Liberty is in the beginning of a long layoff, with their next match coming on Feb. 25. The Flames will hit the road for their first Big South matchup of the season, facing Coastal Carolina in a 2 p.m. match in Conway, S.C. From there, Liberty will head to the Midwest, where they'll face off with Oral Roberts and Oklahoma State on Feb. 25 and 27.
