Rebekah Jenkins, and freshmen Brittany Yang (pictured) and Nicola Wellman secured singles victories to help the Lady Flames defeat Longwood, 4-3, Thursday.

A victory from Liberty freshman Nicola Wellman in the No. 6 singles match gave the visiting Lady Flames a 4-3 edge, Thursday against Longwood, as the team secured its first victory of the spring.

The Lady Flames are now 1-3 in 2012, while Longwood is 0-1 with the season-opening loss.  Liberty has defeated Longwood in back-to-back matches and takes a 6-5 lead in the all-time series.

Liberty swept through the doubles matches, taking all three contests to secure the opening point of the afternoon.  In the No. 1 match, sophomores Alexandra Sheeran and Rebekah Jenkins defeated Malin Allgurin and Allison Shulman, 8-6, for their team-leading third doubles win of the year.

Meanwhile, Cameron Richard and Brittany Yang defeated Marta Pinyol and Sarah Moomau, 8-4, in the No. 2 match, and the Lady Flames' duo of Carol Lobel and Wellman eased by Hannah Hill and Nicole Parker, 8-3, in the final doubles match.

The homestanding Lancers made a charge in singles play, beginning with a pair of three-set victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches.

However, the Lady Flames responded in the middle two singles matches, with two straight-set wins.  Jenkins defeated Shulman, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 match.  Playing in the No. 4 slot, Yang picked up her team-leading third singles victory of the year, defeating Hill, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

With Longwood picking up another three-set victory in the No. 5 match, the score stood all square with the final singles match deciding the overall victory.

Claiming the first singles dual victory of her collegiate career, Wellman upended Parker, 6-4, 6-4 to give the Lady Flames their first win of 2012.
