Ryan Smith, the conference leader in the men's shot put and weight throw, earned his second consecutive Big South Conference Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week award on Thursday.

For the second week in a row, Liberty redshirt junior Ryan Smith has been recognized as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, it was announced today.

Smith's top event at Saturday's Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup was the weight throw, where he unleashed a personal-best toss of 61-6.75. He finished as the event runner-up, just one inch behind Penn State's Will Barr.

Smith also recorded a shot put mark of 56-6.5 which was good for fourth place in the competition. Between his two events, Smith scored 13 of the Flames' 49 points, helping them finish fifth in the final team standings.

Just two weeks before the start of the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships, Smith tops the conference performance list in both the shot put (58-4.75) and weight throw (61-6.75). He is more than five feet ahead of his nearest conference competitor in the shot put and 21 inches ahead of second place in the weight.

Smith will have one final chance to tune up for the Big South meet this Saturday, when he throws the shot put and weight at the Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass. The two-day invitational at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center will commence with the women's events on Friday.
