As the Liberty softball team prepares for its 2012 season opener, LibertyFlames.com's Nick Pierce caught up with head coach Paul Wetmore and senior second baseman Kelly Strickland to preview the season.

Liberty, the defending Big South champion, opens the campaign at the Elon Invitational, held Friday through Sunday in Elon, N.C. The Lady Flames will take on Elon on Friday at 3:30, and will also face Georgetown and North Carolina Central at the invitational this weekend.

Wetmore earned his 500th career victory as head coach of the Lady Flames on April 20, 2011 against Norfolk State. Strickland, Liberty's first softball All-American, was named Big South Co-Player of the Year after leading the league with 16 homers and 47 RBIs in 2011.

The team will begin the home portion of its schedule on March 6, when Liberty hosts East Tennessee State for a doubleheader.
