Lady Flames Fall To Old Dominion, 2-0
The Old Dominion Lady Monarchs scored two second half goals to down the Liberty Lady Flames, 2-0, Saturday night, at Liberty Soccer Field.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie going into halftime, due in part to another outstanding effort by Lady Flames' goalkeeper Sonia Rodriguez (Sr, Fairfax, Va.). Not only did the netminder make five saves in the period, but kept Old Dominion off the board by stopping a penalty kick by Laura Beeman in the game's 40th minute.
The Lady Monarchs broke the scoreless deadlock at the 51:15 mark of the second half. Old Dominion's Lisa McKenzie, who was inserted into the Lady Monarch's line-up at halftime, pounced on a deflected Liberty clearing pass and scored her first goal of the season, giving Old Dominion a 1-0 advantage.
McKenzie later put the Lady Monarchs up, 2-0, on her second goal of the night. The forward took a crossing pass from teammate Shavon Knight and score again from 15 yards at 70:25.
For the evening, Old Dominion out shot Liberty, 20-5 and held the edge in corner kicks at 4-2.
Ashley Braam (So., F, Grand Rapids, Mich.) led the Lady Flames with two shots, while both Beeman and Heather Vaughan had three shots apiece for the Lady Monarchs.
Rodriguez made eight saves on the evening for the Lady Flames, while ODU goalkeeper Lauren Tupman had two.
With a victory in the first ever meeting between the two Virginia schools, Old Dominion runs its record to 4-1, while Liberty falls to 1-2-2.
"We really worked hard and I was pleased with our effort," stated Lady Flames' head coach James Price. "We matched them with our effort and intensity, but they were just better than we were in front of the goal."
"Once again, Sonia [Rodriguez] had a great game for us, while Rachel Hetrick played well for us in the back."
Liberty will next be in action on Friday, September 16 when they host the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks at Liberty Soccer Field. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
