Liberty Swimming to Compete in FGCU Quad Meet
Liberty swimming opens the 2012 calendar year in Fort Myers, Fla., where the Lady Flames will cap a training trip on Saturday with a quad meet, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast. The meet, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., features Liberty, the host Eagles, Georgia Tech of the ACC, and North Dakota.
Florida Gulf Coast, the three-time defending Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association champion, is rated sixth in the latest CollegeSwimming.com Women's Mid-Major Division I Ranking. Liberty and North Dakota are both listed among those also receiving consideration in the mid-major rankings.
The Lady Flames enter the New Year with a 3-0 dual-meet record, and are the only CCSA team undefeated in dual meets this season. Liberty has earned road victories over Marshall and Campbell, and defeated Radford, 172-116, on Oct. 28 during its lone home meet.
Liberty placed second the last time it competed, at the Radford Invitational, Nov. 17-19. The team posted six meet records and three pool records during the three-day event at Radford. The Lady Flames also broke three individual program records and one Liberty relay record at the invitational.
Brye Ravettine leads the way for the Lady Flames. She qualified for the 2012 U.S Olympic Team Trials in the 50-meter freestyle by swimming a 25.99 at the USA Swimming Winter National Championships on Dec. 1. She has seven first-place finishes this season, and has been instrumental in Liberty's relay success.
Freshman Erin Curry was named CCSA Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 26 after winning three events and breaking two program records during Liberty's season-opening win over Marshall. Curry's classmate, Emily Duff, has also put her name in the Liberty record books this season, and now holds three program records.
Bethany Wakeley and Cori Gary both have four event victories this season, with Wakeley specializing in butterfly and Gary focusing on sprint free. Wakeley nearly qualified for the Olympic Trials, missing the cut for the 100-meter fly by just 0.51 seconds on Dec. 2.
Liberty's 200 free and 200 medley relays are both ranked third in the latest CCSA top times listings. Additionally, Ravettine is in the top three in the 50 and 100 free, and 100 back.
Florida Gulf Coast (5-1)
Florida Gulf Coast has posted the fastest times in the CCSA in every event so far this season. The Eagles have a 5-1 dual-meet record, defeating Florida International, Miami (Fla.), Florida Atlantic, Boston College and Maine.
Freshman Emma Svensson, a three-time CCSA Swimmer of the Week, has earned NCAA Division I B cuts in the 50 free (22.54), 100 free (49.49) and 100 back (53.88). Junior Danielle Beaubrun registered a B standard swim of 1:02.49 in 100 the breaststroke this season.
North Dakota (5-3)
North Dakota enters Saturday's meet with a 5-3 record in dual meets, most recently defeating Howard in a relay meet on Sunday in Fort Myers. The Fighting Sioux also hold victories over South Dakota, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State and Western Illinois.
Junior Veronica Medon has posted top-eight times in the WAC in the 200 back (2:00.73), 100 fly (56.50) and 200 IM (2:05.67) this season. Sophomore Morgan Lynch has completed the fourth-fastest 500 freestyle in the conference, at 5:00.61.
Georgia Tech (1-5)
Georgia Tech holds a 1-5 mark against a challenging schedule in 2011-12, with its lone win coming against Clemson. The Yellow Jackets posted a fourth-place finish out of nine teams in the Georgia Tech Invitational.
Three Georgia Tech swimmers have clocked NCAA B cuts during the campaign. Senior Heidi Hatteberg qualified with a 55.07 in the 100 back, while fellow classmates Keren Siebner (53.82) and Jordan Evans (54.50) both met the B standard in the 100 fly. Siebner's 100 fly time ranks sixth in the ACC at present.
Following Saturday's meet, Liberty will next compete at Duquesne on Jan. 14 in Pittsburgh, Pa. It will be the Lady Flames' first-ever meeting with the Dukes.
