Liberty Baseball Releases 2007 Schedule

The Liberty Baseball team has announced its 2007 slate, featuring a trip to Arizona and participation in the Citadel Shootout. The Flames will open their season on the road for the second-straight season at East Carolina on Feb. 9.

The Flames schedule features 11 games with four teams which made the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Liberty will face NCAA Super Regional participant South Carolina (Feb. 16) at the Citadel Shootout and host Manhattan (Mar. 2-4) along with Big South Conference foes, UNC Asheville (Mar. 16-18) and Winthrop (May 11-13) in three-game weekend series at Worthington Stadium. In addition, the Flames also will travel to perennial PAC-10 contender Arizona the first week in May (11-13) for a three-game series with the Wildcats and midweek contests with CAA regular season champion James Madison (Mar. 14 & Apr. 18).

Liberty will begin the season with six road contests, before returning home on February 23 to host Albany at Worthington Stadium at 2:30 p.m. The Flames open the season with a three-game weekend series at East Carolina (Feb. 9-11) and then, travel to Charleston, S.C. for the Citadel Shootout the following weekend. At the Shootout, Liberty will face South Carolina in the opening game of the tournament on Feb. 16, square off with host the Citadel on Feb. 17 and close out the three-day event with a contest against Richmond on Feb. 18.

Beginning with a three-game series with Albany on Feb.23, the Flames will host 32 home games this season. Liberty will also open up Big South Conference play at Worthington Stadium with a three-game series with 2006 Big South Champion UNC Asheville (Mar. 16-18).

Besides UNC Asheville, the Flames will host Charleston Southern, Radford and Winthrop at Worthington Stadium in conference play. Liberty will face conference rivals High Point, Coastal Carolina and VMI on the road. The conference's eight teams will vie for the 2007 Big South Baseball Championship at the Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C., beginning May 23, with a champion being crowned on May 26 and receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Head Coach Matt Royer enters his fifth season at Liberty after guiding the Flames to 39-21 mark and the Big South Championship title game last season. Liberty's 39 wins were the most in victories in school history at the Division I level.
