Women's Tennis Announces Signing
Liberty women's tennis head coach Chris Johnson has announced the signing of Valerie Thong to a national letter of intent. The current high school senior signed during the November early signing period and will enroll at Liberty for the 2012-13 academic year.
"We are absolutely thrilled that Valerie has chosen Liberty," expressed Johnson. "She has a long list of accomplishments in junior tennis and will make an immediate impact in our lineup."
Hailing from Alhambra, Calif., Thong's most heralded achievements come in doubles play. In early December, Thong capped off her partnership with Campbell Hall teammate Zoe Katz, as the duo recorded their third consecutive California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section doubles title. With the victory, they became the first doubles team to win three consecutive Southern Section double titles, while dropping a total of three sets in their partnership over three years.
The duo's 2010 title helped Campbell Hall become just the second Southern Section girls' tennis team to win the singles, doubles and team championships in the same year, leading to the team's honor as the All-Area Team of the Year, named by the L.A. Daily News. Thong also helped Campbell Hall win the team championship in 2009.
According to tennisrecruiting.net, Thong currently holds a No. 45 ranking in the state of California.
Thong will join a still youthful, but very experienced team for 2013. Last season, the Lady Flames tied program-best marks of 16-5 overall and 6-1 in Big South conference play, thanks in part to four freshmen posting double-digit singles victories on the year. The 6-1 conference mark led to the program's first share of a regular season Big South title. After advancing to the semifinals of the Big South Women's Tennis Championships, the team ended the season ranked No. 10 in the ITA Atlantic Region, also a first for the program.
Johnson's previous two recruiting classes have received honorable mention from TennisRecruiting.net's Top-25 Mid-Major recruiting class listings.
The Lady Flames' 2011 campaign begins on Jan. 27, when they face Georgetown at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.
