Lady Flames Maintain First Place at Radford Invitational
Liberty leads the 2011 Radford Invitational after finishing the second day of competition on Friday, and heads into the final day of the meet with a 48.5 point edge over its nearest competitor.
The Lady Flames scored 274.5 points on Friday, giving the team a total of 508.5 points so far during the invitational. Georgia Southern sits in second place with 460 total points. Campbell (458), Saint Francis (Pa.) (318) and North Florida (316.5) round out the top five teams in the ten-team field.
For the second day in a row, Liberty opened up the finals by winning the first relay. The Lady Flames' A team, consisting of Brye Ravettine, Jennifer Garzinski, Marley Cripe and Cori Gary, won the 200 medley relay in 1:46.82, breaking the pool record. Liberty also placed its B team in fourth during the 200 medley relay, giving the Lady Flames 70 points.
Liberty also won the 800 freestyle relay, as the team of Duff, Sarah McCorkle, Margaret Riel and Bethany Wakeley completed the event in a program-record 7:47.02. With the Lady Flames' B team placing ninth, Liberty claimed 58 points in the 800 free relay, good for 128 relay tallies on the day.
Emily Duff and Erin Curry both lowered Curry's 400 individual medley program record. Duff placed fifth with a Liberty-record time of 4:34.54, while Curry finished closely behind in 4:34.71.
Bethany Wakeley claimed victory in the 100 fly, swimming a 57.55. Her season-best 100 fly on Friday was 0.24 behind her own Liberty record in that event.
Ravettine took first place for the 100 backstroke, finishing with a meet-record time of 58.12.
The 2011 Radford Invitational concludes on Saturday, with preliminary swims starting at 9 a.m. The finals will begin at 4:15, and the meet will come to an end with the 400 freestyle relay.
