Liberty Earns No. 1 Seed in Big South Volleyball Championship
Liberty and Winthrop finished in a tie for the Big South regular-season championship, good for Liberty's fifth straight conference championship. The Lady Flames earned the No. 1 seed at the 2011 Big South Volleyball Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting. Their 3-2 win at Winthrop on Oct. 21 broke the first-place tie with the Eagles.
The tournament will open on Thursday at CSU Fieldhouse on the campus of Charleston Southern University, with No. 1 seed Liberty facing No. 8 Gardner-Webb. The Lady Flames and Runnin' Bulldogs split the season series, with Liberty defeating Gardner-Webb, 3-2, on Oct. 1 at the Vines Center and Gardner-Webb downing Liberty, 3-0, Friday in Boiling Springs, N.C.
Liberty will face Gardner-Webb as its first-round opponent in the Big South tournament for the fourth season in a row. In fact, the Lady Flames are the only team that Gardner-Webb has faced in the Big South Volleyball Championship during its conference membership.
Radford earned the No. 3 seed, posting a 9-5 Big South record, and UNC Asheville garners the fourth seed with a 7-7 conference record.
Campbell and High Point both totaled 6-8 standings this season, but the Camels earned the No. 5 seed due to two victories over the Panthers this season. High Point will serve as the sixth seed.
Coastal Carolina tallied a 5-9 conference record, matching Gardner-Webb's Big South standing. The Chanticleers hold the tie-breaker due to a win over the Runnin' Bulldogs during the regular season, leaving Coastal Carolina as the No. 7 seed and Gardner-Webb with the eighth and final seed.
The 2011 Big South Volleyball Championship opens Thursday with four quarterfinal matches, and ends with the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 20. The Big South tournament champion earns an automatic qualification into the NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship.
