Thomas Tabbed Big South Defensive Player of Week
Liberty junior middle blocker Loren Thomas has been named Big South Defensive Player of the Week, for the week ending Oct. 23. Thomas helped the Lady Flames stymie the Winthrop and Presbyterian College attacks, as Liberty won twice to gain first place outright in the Big South volleyball standings.
Thomas, an Ocoee, Fla., native, claims her third defensive player of the week honor of the season, as she previously earned the award Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, 2011. She leads the Big South with 1.35 blocks per set, and has posted a career-high 112 blocks so far this season.
The junior middle blocker registered 18 blocks during a pair of Big South victories. Liberty defeated Winthrop, Friday to gain the Big South lead outright, and then swept Presbyterian on Saturday.
On Friday, she posted a Liberty rally-scoring-record 13 blocks, helping the Lady Flames hold Winthrop to a .055 attack percentage. She is the first Liberty player to record two 10-block matches during the same season in the rally-scoring era.
Thomas registered five blocks on Saturday at Presbyterian College, as the Blue Hose hit just .106 during the Liberty 3-0 sweep.
Liberty (13-11, 8-1 Big South) plays host to Radford (11-13, 5-4) Friday at 7 p.m., in a rematch of the Big South opener. The Lady Flames defeated the Highlanders, 3-2, Sept. 23 at the Dedmon Center. Friday's match will serve as Liberty's "Dig Pink" breast cancer awareness contest.
