Liberty Opens Swimming Season With Win at Marshall

Brye Ravettine won the 100 backstroke and played a key role on Liberty's two winning relay teams.

Liberty pulled out a 147-141 season-opening win, Saturday at Marshall, earning the meet victory by placing first and second in the final event, the 200 freestyle relay.

The Lady Flames open their second season at 1-0, while Marshall falls to 2-2 in dual meets this season.

In total, three program records fell on Saturday. Emily Duff broke the Liberty record in the 1,000 freestyle (10:53.05), while Erin Curry posted new standards in the 200 backstroke (2:08.32) and 400 individual medley (4:34.95).

Trailing by seven points entering the final event, the 200 freestyle relay, the Lady Flames' teams both finished ahead of the Herd's first squad, giving Liberty the meet victory. Liberty's "A" team won the event in 1:37.18, followed closely by the Lady Flames' "B" team with a 1:37.56.

The Lady Flames swept the top two positions in both relays. Liberty claimed the top three spots in four individual events and had six individual event winners overall. Marshall won six individual races. The Herd took top honors in the distance races, along with the breaststroke and butterfly events.

Sarah McCorkle won the 200 free in a time of 1:56.47, sparking a Liberty sweep of the sprint freestyle events. Freshman Cori Gary claimed the 50 free in 24.47 and posted a 53.83 in winning the 100 free.

The Lady Flames claimed victory in both backstroke events. Brye Ravettine won the 100 back in 58.96 and Curry clocked a program-record 2:08.32 to win the 200 backstroke.

Curry claimed her second victory of the meet by swimming a Liberty-best 4:34.95 in the 400 IM.  

Liberty hosts Radford, Friday at 5 p.m. at the LaHaye Aquatics Center. The meet will serve as the Lady Flames' conference opener and lone home meet of the season.
