Liberty opens its 2011-12 swimming season Saturday at Marshall, with the meet beginning at 2 p.m.

Liberty begins the 2011-12 swimming season Saturday at Marshall in Huntington, W.Va. Saturday's 2 p.m. meet will serve as the season opener for the Lady Flames' second campaign of intercollegiate competition, and their first ever meeting with the Herd.

Liberty enters its second year with a squad of 17 swimmers, comprised of six sophomores and 11 freshmen. The team posted a 7-9 dual meet record during 2010-11, before finishing sixth out of 13 teams in the CCSA Championships.

Brye Ravettine is Liberty's most-heralded returning swimmer, finishing second in both the 50 and 100 free at the 2011 conference meet and earning Co-Freshman of the Meet. She was also named Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention by collegeswimming.com.

Sophomores Bethany Wakeley and Sarah McCorkle serve as team captains, as both were instrumental in the team's success as a first-year program. Wakeley and McCorkle both contributed to Liberty's relays, while Wakeley holds seven individual event records, the most on the team.

A talented group of freshmen joins the returning student-athletes to form a deep program that should produce faster times this season. Several incoming freshmen boast top-eight conference times, while Ravettine, McCorkle and Wakeley all scored points in individual events at the 2011 CCSA Championships.

Marshall has posted a 2-1 record in dual-meet action so far this season, defeating CCSA foes Radford and Campbell and losing to James Madison. The Herd finished second at the West Virginia Games this past weekend, and opens its home slate Saturday against Liberty.

Two Marshall student-athletes hold program records. Sophomore Heather Moore is the Marshall record holder in the 1,000 (10:14.37) and 1,650 freestyle (16:53.31), while junior Vera Niemeyer is first in the 200 backstroke at 2:03.50.

Marshall will be the first of four Liberty opponents that the Lady Flames will meet for the first time this season, joining Duquesne, Georgia Tech and North Dakota.

Following Saturday's meet, Liberty returns home, where the Lady Flames will host Radford in the Lady Flames' lone meet at the LaHaye Aquatics Center, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m.
