Campbell Defeats Liberty on Late Goal
With the score tied in the 89th minute, Campbell's Pirjo Leppikangas netted the game-winning goal, edging the Liberty Lady Flames 2-1, Saturday night at Osborne Stadium.
With the defeat, Liberty falls 5-6-3 on the season and 2-3-1 in the Big South. It was the third consecutive setback for the Lady Flames. Campbell improves to 10-3-2 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 4-0-2.
Forward Kelly Henion put the Lady Flames on the board early in the contest, scoring a goal in the opening 90 seconds of the contest. After a shot attempt by Lauren Stell was blocked by a Campbell defender, Henion followed up on the rebound with a short blast. The redshirt sophomore's goal was her second of the season, giving Liberty a 1-0 lead.
Liberty maintained its advantage until Campbell found the equalizer in the 26th minute. Midfielder Ashley Clark dished it to Leppikangas, who sent a pass to Kirsty Meyer. The forward then placed the ball in the right corner of the net, knotting the contest, 1-1.
After the goal, both squads found shots hard to come by, as neither was able to place a shot on goal.
The Lady Flames outshot the Camels, 10-5, in the opening period, with each team taking a corner kick.
The second period opened with play contained in the midfield between the 18-yard boxes.
In the 66th minute, midfielder Maddie Boone nearly gave Liberty the advantage. Coming free off the top left side of the 18-yard box, Boone fired a hard shot, which was deflected. The ball continued towards the far corner, forcing Bailee Johnston to push the ball off the Campbell goal line, preventing score.
With time winding down and Liberty defenders closing quickly, Leppikangas lifted a shot from 25-yards out into the back of the Liberty net for the game-winner at 88:58.

Blocker played the full 90 minutes in the net for Liberty, making four saves. Torrero ended the night in goal for Campbell with three saves.
The Lady Flames return to Osborne Stadium on Thursday, playing host to VMI. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
