Four Lady Flames Participate in BJK Invitational
For the third-consecutive year, the Liberty women's tennis team was represented in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Women's Collegiate Invitational. Senior Carol Lobel, sophomores Rebekah Jenkins and Cameron Richard, and freshman Brittany Yang participated in the tournament which is contested at the site of the U.S. Open.
While each Lady Flame had a singles matchup in the Round of 16, Lobel was the sole Liberty competitor to post a win in the main draw. The senior defeated Alexandra Sachs of St. Francis (Pa.), 6-2, 6-3 to advance in the E Draw. In the next round, Lobel was matched with the overall No. 1 seed, Elle Caldwell of Brown. Lobel nearly pulled off the upset victory, as she fell in three sets, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-7.
Competing in the F Draw, Jenkins dropped a tightly contested opening match in three sets. After taking the first set, 6-4, Rutgers' Lindsay Balsamo leveled the match with a 6-4 set of her own. In the 10-pooint breaker, Balsamo edged out Jenkins, 11-9. In the back draw, Jenkins advanced in back to back matches due to opponent injuries, with one-set leads in both matches. St. John's Ece Firat, who held a No. 3 seed, retired after facing a 6-2, 3-2 deficit, while Tamara Markovic withdrew while trailing 6-0, 3-0.
Yang, competing in the C Draw, posted one victory on the weekend. After being sent to the back draw, the Newnan, Ga., native defeated Farleigh-Dickinson's Julia Prantl, 6-3, 6-2. Yang nearly advanced one more match, but fell in three sets to Binghamton's Marina Bykovskaya, 5-7, 6-1, 10-5.
Richard faced the event's toughest competition, playing in the A Draw. While not picking up a victory, Richard was narrowly edged in her second match of the event. After exchanging sets of 7-5 to Harvard's Hannah Morrill, her opponent claimed the 10-point breaker 12-10.
In doubles play, Jenkins and Lobel teamed for Liberty's sole victory. After falling to the No. 3 seeded pair in the C Draw, the Liberty duo defeated Diamond Adams and Nakita Austin of St. John's, 8-2.
Richard and Yang competed in the A Draw for doubles play, but did not post a victory.
Liberty's women's tennis team will return to the courts on Oct. 18, when they begin play in the ITA Atlantic Regional in Norfolk, Va.
